Every “best grocery app” list ranks by opinion. This one ranks by a number. We took 257 listed prices across 5 Indian delivery apps, normalised each to ₹ per kilogram, and compared them on the same 18 everyday vegetables. On that basket the cheapest and dearest apps are 28% apart for identical produce. Data as of 2 September 2026.

Median ₹/kg is the middle of each app's normalised prices across the vegetables it stocks, so an app carrying only cheap staples is not flattered. Only apps we track on at least 5 of the 18vegetables are ranked. City counts come from DotBuy's dark-store index of 406 Indian cities.

A kirana has no dark-store rent, no rider, and no app to fund. On the sticker price it wins more often than the marketing suggests. What it cannot do is show you seven prices at once, and that is where the money is: on this dataset the same vegetable swings 28% between apps, which is larger than the gap between online and offline for most items.
The rule that survives the arithmetic: use apps for the comparison and the convenience, use the local shop for small top-ups where the delivery and handling fee would exceed the saving, and never assume the app you used last week is still the cheapest.

By normalised per-kilogram price across 18 everyday vegetables, BigBasket comes out lowest with a median of ₹91/kg, against ₹152/kg for Swiggy Instamart. But the ranking flips item by item — no app is cheapest on everything, which is the case for comparing rather than committing.
In DotBuy's dark-store index of 406 Indian cities, Blinkit reaches 332, Swiggy Instamart reaches 196, Flipkart Minutes reaches 134. Reach and price are different questions — the widest network is rarely the cheapest.
On the sticker price, usually not — a local shop has no dark-store rent or rider cost to recover. Grocery apps win on discounts and on the trip you did not make. The honest comparison is the delivered total including handling and delivery fees, which on a small basket can add ₹40-₹70 and erase the difference entirely.

Generally yes. Slot-based services like DMart Ready and JioMart consistently price below the instant apps on the same produce, because they are not paying to keep it within ten minutes of you. You are buying time, and on this dataset that time costs a real percentage on every kilogram.
